Valuable Lessons from Visiting the Sick and Infirm..."I was sick and you visited me".

Lately, as I have travelled with my Dad through his Journey of Recent Illness over the past 4 Months, I have learned many lessons. In addition to visiting my Dad each day, I have seen and spoken with many people living with various forms of illness. Some, like my Dad, find themselves in the Twilight of there lives struggling with Physical, Spiritual and Emotional Pain. I've witnessed over the past few months, How important Support from Family and Friends is to the Healing and Recovery Process. Below are some thoughts that came to my mind during this ongoing process. This is in no way meant to be a sermon, but, simply thoughts that came to my mind during this ongoing Journey. Frankly, "I would rather see a sermon, than hear one any day".

In the past few months, I have seen some patients with family members who came to visit and support their Loved ones who recovered and were able to return home, while others languished with no one to visit or, support them. For them; I say Thank God for the dedicated Nurses,Doctors, Aides and Staff members who selflessly care for them on a DailyBasis. I will never forget their kindness toward my Dad during his time in the facility.  However, the flip side, is that I discovered that as we all move toward the end of Physical Life in this world, oftentimes all we have is Time and those who love and care for us. I came to the conclusion that, In the end, it doesn't really matter How much money we made or, How prestigious our Job was etc...; The main Lessons are that we learned to live One Day at a Time and to Live it to the full or, as my old High School Football Coach Ed Agresta always says:...
"Don't Count the Days, Make the Days Count", because when our time comes near, God will not ask us How much money did you make?, How Big was your home? or, How many friends did you have? No,... in my opinion, that won't be what we are Judged on in the end, it is much simpler than I thought.

What I believe is that God will ask us all in the end is,
  • How Did you use all the Gifts and Blessings I gave you to help others?
  • Did you use the gifts I freely gave you to lighten someone Else's burden and pain?
Simply put,,
  • Did you help the poor?
  • Did you visit the Sick and Imprisoned?
  • Did you take the time to Comfort those in Mourning?
  • Were you humble enough to avoid Boasting about yourself?
  • Did you do the right thing, even when no one was watching over you? Character Counts
  • Did you show Mercy to those who asked for Mercy?
  • Did you try your best to maintain a pure heart?
  • Were you a Peacemaker or, a Crazy-maker?
  • Finally, did you continue to believe in me, even when it was Unpopular and Difficult to stay the Course?
Again, in my Humble opinion, In the end, it's all about what we did for others?
Most of the people I met on this Journey over these past few months with my Dad need us to Live the Gospel, not just talk about it, especially when many of them are left to languish with no one to visit them. No one deserves to be abandoned and forgotten. Fortunately, I came away  much more THANKFUL that my Dad does not have to endure this journey alone, He is Blessed with Family, Children and Friends who have given new meaning to the phrase:
"A True Friend, is one who walks in, when the Rest of the World Walks out."

                                                             The Golden Rule

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,
for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

                                                                                     Thanks for Listening._________________________________________________________________________________

Matthew 5: Sermon on the Mount

1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes a.k.a... (The How to Be-Attitudes)

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart,

for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Murder

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court.
Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

 Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g]

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’
44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 If you love only those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others?
Do not even pagans do that?
48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 6

Giving to the Needy

1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.
If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

'Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,[j]

but deliver us from the evil one.[k]’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.
If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and money.

Do Not Worry: Trust in God... Dios Provera

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the flowers of the field grow.
They do not labor or spin.
29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough worries of it's own.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 7

Judging Others:
Avoid Gossiping and Breaking others Down, Be A Builder-Upper Instead

1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and
with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Ask, Seek, Knock

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

 The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate.
For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

True and False Prophets

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?
17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Memorial Day Weekend 2011...Remembering... "Freedom is Not Free"

Dear Friends,

As we approach the 10 year Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States of America, I can't help but reflect on the Brave Women and Men who continue the fight for Peace, Justice and the American Way. Okay, so I stole that line from the old Superman Show.
Nevertheless, as we all head out this weekend to enjoy the Holiday weekend where we can do whatever we find pleasurable and relaxing, let us never forget those Brave Service men and women who are out there protecting and ensuring our Safety and Freedom. Hoorah!

Therefore, as we partake of that Freedom, let us spend some of that time saying a Memorial Prayer for all those Soldiers and War Veterans, living and deceased, who paid and continue to make the Ultimate Sacrifice to keep Our Beloved Nation Free and Safe; Remembering, that without them this Holiday Weekend would not be possible.

Let we ever forget, that ...
"Freedom is NOT Free" and that, "All gave some and Some Gave All".

Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend Everybody!

Sincerely,
Jimmy Greene

Bullycide in America

Bullycide in Amercia...When? and How? will it End?...When the Punishment Fits the Crime.

Since the tragic Loss and Death of Tyler Clementi a Talented and Bright Rutgers University Student and accomplished violinist via Bullycide the Media Spotlight has turned toward New Jersey. Sadly, it took yet another young persons Suicide as a result of Cyber-Bullying and Intolerance to begin the journey towards the eradication of such Hate Crimes. Bullycide, is just one of hundreds, perhaps , thousands of stories of young people who lost HOPE and were induced to take their own lives due to Relentless, Serial Bullying at the hands of their fellow Peers. When will America step up and say, "Enough is Enough" , How many more of our young people have to die for us to wake up and put a stop on this.
I ask When will it end?, The only answer I can find is when A "Zero" Tolerance on Bullying in Schools or, anywhere is consistently enforced. This will require a complete Culture change for us as a society. Whereby we all band together to Stop this by enacting tough Anti-Bullying and Harassment Laws that can be enforced so the Punishment Fits the Crime.
Fortunately, New Jersey seems to be taking the lead with it's Introduction of the Toughest Anti-Bullying Laws in the Nation. For the sake of Tyler Clementi and all who have lost their lives as a result of Bullycide. We owe them our firm resolve to put an end to these types of Crimes.

Bullying in American Schools: Why there is a need for schools to Adopt a "Zero" Tolerance Policy

Recently, I was deeply disturbed at yet another case of Bullycide in an American Public School. On January 14, 2010 a young girl named Phoebe Prince who attended Hadley Public School in Hadley Massachusetts sadly commit ed suicide after being relentlessly Bullied by 9 of her classmates. In fact, she was apparently Bullied to Death. Thus, the need for the website named Bullycide. However, as an advocate for those like Phoebe who are Bullied everyday in our schools, I am forced to ask myself the question? How many more of our children have to needlessly take their own lives before we as a society become enraged enough to send a message to school administrators and yes, parents of these Bullies, that nothing short of a "Zero" Tolerance Policy and immediate Expulsion for any student found guilty of Serial Bullying is demanded.
Sadly, for kids like Phoebe and her parents it is will be too late. Their beautiful daughter is gone from this life and the Bullies will live on. Reportedly, these cowardly Bullies were confronted the week prior to Phoebe's death. However, despite the 'Alleged" intervention, the Bullies were not removed from the school and were allowed to continue terrorizing Phoebe. Faced with an un-relenting barrage of continued Bullying, Harassment and Teasing and a lack of Courage by the school officials, she made a fatal decision because she lost all HOPE. Unfortunately, Suicide was a permanent solution to what should have been a Temporary Problem. In this writers opinion, this should be the last time a parent has to bury a child due to Bullycide. I propose that, in addition to the individual state laws, that a Federal Law; Perhaps. Phoebe's' Law should be introduced that would impose severe penalties and Zero Tolerance for any student(s) who are found guilty of Serial Bullying and that the parents of these Bullies be held accountable for their children's actions. It's time to say, enough is enough and we shouldn't rest until "Phoebe's Law" is passed by Congress. Bullying should be a Federal crime when is leads any young person, anywhere in the world to take their own life. Wake up America!!! How many more kids have to die...from Bullycide before we have the courage to put an end to it once and for all.
Phoebe may you Rest in the PEACE of Christ never to be Bullied again. Amen!

Derek Jeter's Most Thrilling Moment in Life, thus far

Derek Jeter's Most Thrilling Moment thus far...

I recently watched Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees being interviewed by a reporter and he was asked a simple question at the end...What has been your Most Thrilling moment in life?
After a moment of reflection, he said: "When my sister beat Cancer."
For a man who has been a part of more success than most can imagine, his reply speaks volumes about Derek Jeter as a person. His reply had nothing to do with him or, his numerous athletic achievements. It was about his sister's victory on the battlefield of Cancer; not his World Series Victories. What an amazing response to a question that could have been all about him and his achievements, which are , indeed admirable, not Mr. Jeter. He knows that the real key to success in this life is in the fact that, it's all about others; That there is more to life than Baseball Games and Material things. What a great message for us all to hear from arguably one of the best Baseball players in our recent history.
In my book, Derek Jeter's response here is one that makes him truly,
A Man for All Seasons. He gets it.

How to get and stay Motivated in 2010 and Beyond

Dear friends,

Today, I am thinking of ways to get, and stay motivated throughout 2010 and beyond. The thing about Motivation though is that it is an "Inside Out" thing, not an "Outside In" thing. Thus, ultimately we must be motivated from within, first and foremost. However, each day we are surrounded by some people who are extremely into helping others to get and stay motivated and they do it on a regular basis. And so, I would like to share with you two of the persons that I consider to be some of the best at staying motivated and helping others to do the same. They are Rob Gilbert and Ed Agresta. These two individuals, more than anyone I know, are Master Motivators and two of the TOP Motivational Speakers/Teachers in the Country. Each of them in their own unique way has had a positive and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people, my self included, by their dedication to their Life's Mission which is to give other people HOPE. I have learned from each of them that the acronym, H.O.P.E. stand for, Hold On Possibilities Exist...thanks to Jim from Ringwood. (More on the Master of Motivational Acronyms another time.)...
In any event, my purpose and goal in this Blog is to share my thoughts, experiences, struggles and triumphs with you, so together, we can, in turn, use this "mutual" motivation to help others by passing it along, i.e., "Paying it Forward".
In my experience, I have come to know, first hand, that Dr. Rob Gilbert and Ed Agresta are Masters at Paying it Forward and Helping others to get to the next level in Life.
Therefore, I would like to introduce you to them so perhaps, they can impact you, as much as they have positivley impacted me and my life... I love Paying it Forward...So here goes...

Dr. Rob Gilbert has been a professor at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey for the past 35 years. He is a Sports Psychologist and is widely considered Nationally as one of the foremost experts in his field. During his illustrious career, he has helped thousand of people including (Students, Coaches, Success Hotline Callers) and many more, to understand the keys to Success in Life, School and beyond. In fact, his book, How to Have Fun without Failing Out is a must read for anyone in college, or about to enter college. In it he gives readers 430 Tips from his perspective as a college professor on How to, not just Succeed, but, How to Excel in School. I've read it, and I Higly Recommend it. It is available at www.hcibooks.com or at Barnes and Noble Book Stores.
In addition to helping others through his Books, Dr. Gilbert has been a Motivational Speaker for over 30 years. In that time, he has motivated an untold number of people through his speaking and, has been a Mentor to so many others who wish to become Motivational Speakers, or who simply need that extra push to get to the next level themselves. That is why I am proud to call Dr. Gilbert one of my mentors and speaking coaches. (More on the Importance of find the right mentors in life in another post). He is a Great Coach, Teacher and more importantly, a great friend.
In addition to being a college professor, coach, author, motivational speaker and mentor, Dr. Gilbert utilizes his Success Hotline which he began back in 1993 to provide callers with 3 minutes of Motivaional and Inspirational thoughts. That's an amazing run of providing motivational messages on a daily basis for over 17 years. That record speaks for itself, Dr. Gilbert is dedicated to Helping others by any means possible. You can always count on Dr.Gilbert to give you that little extra. You can reach Dr.Gilbert's Success Hotline by calling ...
973-743-4690 . Finally, to learn more about Dr. Gilbert you can go to his Blog at www.gilbertsuccesshotline.blogspot.com.

Ed Agresta is another equally dedicated professional who as a teacher, coach, mentor and motivational speaker who has positively impacted the lives of thousands of his students, players and anyone with whom he comes in contact. Personally, I can't say enough about Ed Agresta and his impact on my life. I know this embarasses him whenever i tell this story, but, I'll tell it anyway.
When I first met Ed Agresta in 1982, he had been hired as the new Head Football coach at my High School. I was a skinny, 130 Pound soaking wet sophomore football player. Little did I know the lasting lifetime impact Ed Agresta would have on me and my teamates. I can say for myself, his infectious positive Attitude and Influence remains with me to this day. As a Coach and Mentor, he may never know the full impact he had on soo many of his students and players over his over 35+ years of teaching and coaching... As for me, I can tell you what I do know. What I do know from my own personal experience is that Ed Agresta is a man who has dedicated his life to helping others including his students, players, fellow teachers and coaches to believe in themselves and to never underestimate their ability to help others. In doing so,he has managed to impact the lives of an untold number of people.
Ed Agresta is a True Mentor, which to me, is defined as "Someone who believes in you, more than you believe in yourself." These types of Individuals have a "unique" ability to see our hidden talents and help us to dispel the doubts and fears we may have in order to succeed in life... That's what people like Rob Gilbert and Ed Agresta do, they teach, they coach, they mentor and perhaps, most of all, they give of themselves (Their Time, Talent and Treasure) for the advancement and benefit of others.

Thanks, for all you do and continue to do to help others to believe in themselves.

Ed Agresta is a Motivational Speaker who specializes in Peak Performance. He is a Great Motivational Speaker who message leaves a lasting impression on all those who hear him speak.

I hope you enjoyed this post about these two awesome individuals, Rob Gilbert and Ed Agresta.

Jimmy Greene
